Career Path: Female Professor at a University of Applied Sciences

Only about one-quarter of the professorships of the 20 universities in Lower Saxony are held by women. Women are also significantly under-represented for the same positions at the universities of applied sciences in Lower Saxony.

In the majority of cases, only a few and sometimes even no women apply for advertised professorships. This is where the career path “Female professor at universities of applied sciences”-project comes into play. The long-term goal of the “lakog niedersachsen”-project is to increase the proportion of female professors at universities and universities of applied sciences in Lower Saxony.

So far, only few aspiring female scientists have been pointed towards the possibility of becoming professors at universities of applied sciences. The Ministry for Science and Culture of Lower Saxony (MWK) aims to counter this issue with the dialog initiative “Gender-sensitive university culture” (Field of action: Gender-sensitive human resource development). Thus, “lakog niedersachsen” is currently implementing this project.
